Wed, Feb 10, 2010, 12:59 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka police had to fire tear gas to disperse two groups of protesters including Buddhist monks embroiled in a clash at Hulftsdorp in Colombo, police spokesman Superintendent of Police Preshantha Jayakody said.

A group protesting the arrest of General Sarath Fonseka came under attack by another group believed to be government supporters at Hulftsdorp where Sri Lanka's Supreme Court complex is located.

The opposition has vowed to launch more protests countrywide against Fonseka's arrest demanding his release. Fonseka was arrested by the military police on Monday night for violating the Military Act.
