Feb 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka will hold parliamentary elections on April 8 and nominations will be accepted from February 19 to 26, according to a Gazette notification issued on Wednesday.

The new parliament is scheduled to convene on April 22, 2010.

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa dissolved the 225-member parliament effective midnight yesterday (09) under the powers vested in him under Article 70 of the Constitution and in pursuance of the provisions of Section 10 of the Parliamentary Elections Act no. 1 of 1981, the government website said.

General elections will be held to select 196 members of the parliament. The other 29 will be chosen from the national lists of political parties and/or independent groups.

The current parliament elected in 2004 completes its six-year term by April 22 and according to the Elections Act, the elections for the new parliament should be held 6-8 after the dissolution.
