Feb 10, Colombo: The United States Ambassador to Colombo, Ms. Patricia Butenis recently visited the students at Sammanthurai Vocational Training Center in Ampara District, an Embassy press release said.
The Sammanthurai VTC is the last of the nice such centers built by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in the South and the East following the tsunami. It was opened on November 13, 2008.
Upon visiting the center and observing the program at the Sammanthurai VTC, Ambassador Butenis said she was pleased to see so many young people engaged in their studies and preparing for their future careers.
"Of the 450 students trained last year at Sammanthurai VTC, 75% of them found jobs and the other 25% started their own businesses. The U.S. Government is pleased to give young people the tools and skills to obtain employment and become financially independent," she said.
USAID also has developed new training curricula to better prepare young people for good job opportunities.
