* IDP children get school admission in Sri Lanka
Wed, Feb 10, 2010, 01:09 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 09, Vavuniya: Sri Lankan government has admitted 2,000 internally displaced children living outside the welfare camps to 59 regular public schools in Vavuniya on Monday.

Northern Province Governor said another 2,000 children deprived of school education would be admitted to Gamini Maha Vidyalaya in Vavuniya today.

The government has taken this measure to provide equal access to education for all the children after receiving complaints that the children of displaced families living with their relations outside the welfare centers have been denied school education.

Major General Chandrasiri said the Education Ministry has provided infrastructure to accommodate them under the Uthuru Vasanthaya Program and the government is taking measures to ensure that the children of IDP families have easy access to secondary and higher educational opportunities.

"We carried out a survey to ascertain the number of IDP children deprived of educational avenues and found that over 4,000 children do not go to school," the Governor said.

He said there are only 25 Montessori schools in the Chettikulam welfare centre to accommodate 2,000 pre-school students.

The GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level students of displaced families resettled in their original places have been provided with bicycles for transportation to schools.

The Education Ministry is in the process of upgrading infrastructure facilities to schools in the Northern Province, the Governor said.
