Sri Lanka President arrives in country after successful visit to Russia

Feb 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived in the country this morning after a successful 3-day state visit to the Russian Federation.
A large number of ministers were present at the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake to welcome the President and religious leaders of all faiths conducted religious observances to bless the President.
During his visit, the President was able to secure a USD 300-million loan assistance from the Russian Federation for arms purchases. President Rajapaksa also met his Russian counterpart Dimitri Medvedev yesterday to hold discussions to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
The People's Friendship University in Moscow honored the President with a Doctorate Honoris Causa for his service for world peace by successfully eradicating terrorism in the country at a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the university.
President Rajapaksa's visit was the first state visit by a Sri Lankan leader to Russia and it was also President's first state visit since elected to a second term last month.
