* Sri Lanka to release all child soldiers by May
Tue, Feb 9, 2010, 12:49 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 09, Colombo: Sri Lankan government is planning to release all the former child soldiers of the Tamil Tiger outfit LTTE who are now being rehabilitated at the government-run rehabilitation centers.

Jagath Wellawatte, Chairman of the National Child Protection Authority said measures are in place to integrate the former rebels into the society by May this year.

According to Mr. Wellawatte, 514 children under the age of 18 are in the custody of the government undergoing a rehabilitation programme implemented according to international standards. Out of the total, 150 had already been handed over to their parents while another 273 are pursuing studies in schools.

The Chairman expressed confidence that all the children could be released to their parents by May 2010. However, the government is also exploring alternatives for cases where no parents or guardian would come forward to accept the children when they are released.

Sri Lanka President last month handed over 712 rehabilitated child soldiers of the LTTE to their parents at Manik Farm in Vavuniya.

Those child soldiers have been rehabilitated and trained in a vocation for future employment in the Vavuniya Social Welfare village.
