Mon, Feb 8, 2010, 09:45 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 08, Colombo: Sri Lankan journalists today held a protest campaign in Colombo demanding the release of an editor who was arrested and is being detained by the police.

Holding placards and shouting slogans the media right activists and the journalists demanded the government to release editor of the Marxist party Lanka newspaper Chandana Sirimalwatte.

Alleging that the government has increased its suppression of the media recently the journalists urged the government to allow the media to report freely.

The government has come under criticism from the media right organizations and human right groups for curtailing the freedom to express.

In a congratulatory message to the President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the Independence Day the United State President Barack Obama also urged the President Rajapaksa to provide freedom of the press which is essential for national reconciliation.
