* Sri Lanka HR Minister leaves for Geneva to defend opposition candidate's war crime allegations
Mon, Feb 8, 2010, 09:28 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 08, Colombo: A high-level delegation led by Sri Lankan Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe left for Geneva on Monday to hold discussions with the United Nations Human Rights Council on the alleged war crimes committed by the government troops in the last stages of the offensive against the LTTE rebels last year.

The delegation which also included Sri Lanka Attorney General Mohan Peiris will meet the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Navanethem Pillay tomorrow.

During the meeting the Minister and his delegation will inform the government's stance on the allegations made by former military chief General Sarath Fonseka during his campaign for presidency.

General Fonseka in an interview to Sri Lanka weekly Sunday Leader alleged that the Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa ordered the then commander of the Army's 58 division Brigadier Shavendra Silva to kill Tamil Tiger rebels, who came out to surrender with white flags during the final phase of the battles in May 2009.

He later retracted the statement when the government and media accused him of betraying the nation and said the newspaper misquoted him, but the editor stood by her story.

The Sri Lankan government will have to defend Fonseka's allegations at the next month's special session of the UNHRC. Ministry of Human Rights and Disaster Management says this visit will help to create a suitable background for it.

Minister Samarasinghe is also expected to meet the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres. During the meeting attention will be focused on the progress of the resettlement process of the remaining displaced persons.
