Mon, Feb 8, 2010, 12:23 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 08, Colombo: Several immediate changes have been made in the Sri Lanka police ranks including that of the police spokesman.

Former police spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) I.M. Karunaratne has been appointed as the Director of Recruitment while the former Director of Recruitment Superintendent of Police (SP) Preshantha Jayakody has been appointed as the new media spokesman with immediate effect.

Meanwhile the hasty transfers made on Saturday of Chief Inspectors, Inspectors of Police, Sub Inspectors and Officers-in-Charge (OIC) have been cancelled on a directive from the Defence Secretary to the IGP.

On Saturday 99 police officers with ranks ranging from Assistant Superintendent of Police to Senior DIG and 109 officers with ranks ranging from Sub Inspector to Chief Inspector had been transferred with immediate effect.

Reportedly the senior police officers who were transferred and recruited for various divisions in the police department have protested against the new appointments.
