* Bus accident in Sri Lanka injures 44 passengers

Feb 08, Kandy: A chartered private bus ran off the road and crashed in the central hill country of Sri Lanka on Sunday injuring 44 passengers.

The bus has reportedly failed to negotiate a bend and crashed in the Kirimetiya area in Manikkinne of the Kandy District yesterday afternoon.

One passenger who was in a critical condition has been admitted to the Peradeniya hospital while the others have been admitted to Kandy and Manikkinne hospitals.

The bus had been carrying residents of Mapanawathura, Katugastota area to the Deyata Kirula exhibition now being held in Pallekale.

Reports said that the driver of the bus has fled after the accident. The police are conducting further investigations.
