* Sri Lanka Army has no plans to arrest opposition candidate
Sun, Feb 7, 2010, 10:53 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 07, Colombo: Sri Lanka military has no plans to arrest the defeated opposition candidate, General Sarath Fonseka, the military said today.

Denying a Sunday Time news report that said the former military chief is to be hauled before a military court, the military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told AP news agency there is no such plan.

The Sunday Times report said that the retired General will be tried in a military court on several charges of conspiracy including an attempt to overthrow the government and assassinate President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Quoting an authoritative legal source, the report said the new move, as against indicting him under the normal laws of the land, came after the CID consulted Attorney General Mohan Peiris.

The AP report quoting Fonseka's lawyer Shiral Laktilaka said that he is unaware of the reported plan. Fonseka can't be summoned before a military court as he is not a serving officer, the lawyer has said.

The government recently arrested 54 retired army officers and deserters who were allegedly involved in a plot to assassinate the President on the election day.

During the election period the police recovered weapons hidden in several areas and explosives from the Bodhirajarama Temple in Maligawatte which are alleged to be used in the conspiracy.

The Criminal Investigation Division is continuing inquiries on the alleged plot by the opposition candidate to assassinate the President with the release of the election results.
