Feb 07, Colombo: Sri Lanka's National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) is planning to implement a special program to prevent the suicide among the school going teenagers.
Chairman of the NCPA, Jagath Wellawatte says steps have been taken to initiate programs promoting psycho social well being among school children between the ages 14 and 18, through music, drama and art.
Experienced officers are conducting these programs and they have the expertise to identify children suffering from any chronic mental illnesses, Wellawatte said.
Sri Lanka had an extraordinarily high suicide rate in the 15-19 age group, at 46.5/100,000, more than six times the global mean rate despite the high standards of living and high literacy rate compared to the other countries in the region.
Over the last year 15 cases of teen suicide had been reported.
The NCPA says divorce of parents, lack of psychological support and easy access to poison contribute significantly to the higher suicide rate.
