Feb 07, Colombo: Sri Lankan government is seeking a two-third majority win in the parliament at the upcoming general election to enable the government to change the constitution, a senior Minister said.
Minister Maithripala Sirisena, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the main constituent party of the ruling alliance, said the government has considered changing the present constitution and expects to receive a two-third majority in the parliament at the upcoming general election.
The Minister said the government will focus intense attention on the Northern and Eastern provinces to meet the aspirations of the Tamil community. The government will accelerate the development of those provinces, he added.
Minister Sirisena said the government hopes to work collaboratively with the Tamil National Alliance to uplift the Northern and Eastern provinces and the community but will not bow to any conditions laid down by the TNA.
He expressed confidence that the ruling United People's Freedom Front (UPFA) will sweep out the Northern and Eastern provinces at the general election.
The Minister said that the general public has placed a firm confidence in the present government and the SLFP as observed at the recent presidential election.
He said the President is ready to dissolve the parliament this week. The term of office of the parliament will be concluded April 22, 2010.
