* Container traffic up at Sri Lanka ports

Feb 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka Port Authority (SLPA) says the number of containers handled at Sri Lankan ports has seen a record increase in 2009.

According to the SLPA, container operations saw a record increase of 12.5% in December 2009. In December 2009 the ports handled 153,317 containers whereas it was 136,268 containers in December 2008.

Meanwhile the total containers handled by the Colombo Port, has increased by 19.2% setting a record, SLPA noted.

After the war ended in May, the northern entrance of the harbour was opened on the advice of the President providing easy access to the ships that use the harbour.
