Feb 05, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has decided to grant salary increases to the members of the security forces.
Chief Government Whip Minister Dinesh Gunawardena revealed this in response to a question from an opposition member when the parliament met today for the first time after the presidential elections last month.
The security forces have already been granted several pay raises, the Minister acknowledged.
Tabling the motion to extend the state of emergency for another month, Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka said the emergency regulations are required for the security of the country.
The security forces are still recovering the hidden weapons although the LTTE has been eliminated, he added.
The PM said an environment conductive to hold the upcoming general elections is needed to be created.
The PM pointed out that security has also been tightened in Chennai after arresting two LTTE cadres with equipment.
