Netherlands to support conservation of the ancient Dutch Fort in Jaffna

Feb 05, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government is to receive a 62 million rupee grant from the Government of the Netherlands to implement the first phase of the project for the conservation of the ancient Dutch Fort in Jaffna.
The Cabinet today approved a proposal submitted by the Minister of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to obtain Rs. 62.1 million grant from the Shares Heritage Fund of the Government of the Netherlands. The government will meet the balance of the cost, Rs. 42.4 million, from local funds.
The first phase of this Project is scheduled to be implemented during the period November 2009 to December 2012.
Government of the Netherlands under the Sri Lanka - Netherlands Cultural Cooperation Programme has provided financial support of Rs.702 million since may 2006 to 19 conservation projects.
Netherlands is also assisting the conservation of the old Dutch Naval Commissioner's House in Trincomalee at a cost of Rs. 75 million.
