Thu, Feb 4, 2010, 09:37 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 04, Colombo: Marking the 62nd Independence Day Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party today honored D. S. Senanayake, the first Prime Minister of independent Sri Lanka and a main activist of the independence movement to gain freedom from the British colonial masters in 1948.

Omar Kamil, Chief City Administrator of the Colombo Municipal Council placed a garland on the statue of D. S. Senanayake at the Independence Square in Colombo this morning.

The opposition party boycotted the government's Independence Day celebrations in Kandy in protest of the loss of their candidate General Sarath Fonseka at the presidential elections which the opposition says rigged and manipulated by the government.

The Deputy Leader of the UNP, Karu Jayasuriya, Rukman Senanayake, Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena, Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku and many others were present at the occasion.
