* Over 1500 prisoners released in Sri Lanka to mark the Independence

Feb 04, Colombo: Prison authorities in Sri Lanka have released 1,576 inmates, who were imprisoned for minor charges, on a presidential pardon to mark the 62nd Independence Day.

According to Prison Commissioner Major General V.R De Silva the prisoners were released from 37 prisons through out the country with the majority from the main Welikada and Bogambara prisons.

A seven day amnesty has been granted to 33 inmates of the Boossa Prison.

The prisoners were released in accordance with the special guidelines issued by the Ministry of Justice and Law prior to the release.

A special deduction of two weeks had been given to prisoners who are serving one to three year prison terms, while prisoners who have failed to pay fines imposed along with the sentence were relieved of the fines.
