* "One country, one people, one law" - Sri Lanka President at Independence Day celebrations
Thu, Feb 4, 2010, 08:49 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 04, Kandy: Addressing the nation on the first Independence Day since the end of the war Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today said that he is proud to raise the flag of Sri Lanka with dignity in the entire country and vowed to regain the progress the country lost due to the three decades of war with the Tamil Tiger rebels.

President Rajapaksa said the people of the North and East suffered for thirty years without their democratic rights and he was able to grant them democracy.

Suggesting to devolve powers to the villages and empowering them in the entire country, the President said discussions will be held with the people and their representatives of those areas to find solutions and take action as necessary.

"We do not strengthen the parties based on divisive politics on the basis of colour or tribe, pro- LTTE or separatist," he stressed.

The President speaking in Tamil asked the Tamil people to live together with the rest of the country without any divisive policies.

"Let us discuss our issues among ourselves and resolve them. One country, one people, one law. That is our way, the only way." he said.

"Hereafter, we will not entertain narrow divisions based on race, religion, language, and political ideology in terms of regions. Never leave room for the politics of hate. Peace, brotherhood, co-existence, and prosperity -- that is our prime objective," he said.

Speaking of foreign policy, the President said the country is entering into a new era of co-existence, a golden era of international relations with other countries after finishing the period of some controversy.

First lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and their three sons, Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka, Speaker W.J.M.Lokubandara, Commanders of the three forces and the Police, ministers and diplomats were also present.
