* Sri Lanka President calls on international community to support country's development
Thu, Feb 4, 2010, 01:05 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa called on the international community to help build a peaceful and successful Sri Lanka to achieve the progress denied by the terrorism for decades.

Writing an opinion column to Wednesday's Wall Street Journal the President said the victory he achieved on January 26th is merely a start for the country. He sought a full mandate from people after eliminating the terrorism and now he will seek to build a stronger nation for the people, a one, more able to succeed in today's globalized world.

President Rajapaksa said he is fully aware that although the elimination of terrorism was an important milestone, the future success depends on a lasting peace and the nation needs to be built around a full reconciliation program.

"My new government will address the genuine grievances of all communities and bolster the enforcement of equal rights for all. We will emphasize better police training to meet the new conditions of peace, and boost representation from all groups in Sri Lankan society," the President promised in his column.

The President asserted that his government will work towards achieving economic growth that benefits all the people in the country through employment opportunities, skill training, and education.

Infrastructure in the North and East will be developed so that these areas can grow in tandem with the rest of the country, he said. "For people that were displaced by the conflict, we will realize their expectations of new livelihoods in peacetime," President Rajapaksa assured.

He called on the world community to come and see the beautiful country and its progress. He asked the investors to realize the huge opportunities and natural resources available to them, experience the proud work ethic of Sri Lankans and make use of the enormous talent of the country's graduates and adaptability of the skilled workers.

Acknowledging the criticism leveled against Sri Lanka from some corners of the world that the government's measures threaten the democracy, the President said the election results have proven otherwise.

"The people of Sri Lanka, democratically and very clearly, have shown that they are free of threats, fear and terrorism, and that they want to embrace the future that could only be achieved through the decisive measures taken last year," the President explained.

The President pledged that his government will work hard for all of the country's people and uphold highest standards of rights for all.

He vowed to make good on predictions that Sri Lanka can become South Asia's Singapore—or better.
