Sri Lankan government to purchase paddy from farmers

Feb 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka government says it plans to purchase about 140,000 metric tons of paddy from the farmers during the Maha season.
Minister for Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services Development Maithripala Sirisena said a purchasing programme will be launched next month via the Paddy Marketing Board to purchase the paddy and the storage facilities are already being prepared for storing.
The government will purchase a kilo of the Nadu variety at 28 rupees and a kilo of Samba variety at 30 rupees. The total purchase is estimated to cost over four billion rupees
Meanwhile, the on the instructions issued by the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the government plans to distribute rice at concessionary rates to the estate sector.
Accordingly, a kilo of the Nadu variety will be sold at 60 rupees to the estate community Nuwara Eliya District Secretary D.P.G. Kumarasiri said. The price of a kilo of white raw rice has been reduced by five rupees.
Instructions have been given to the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) to issue rice stocks to all cooperatives in the Nuwara Eliya District. The distribution of rice will be undertaken through cooperatives.
The measure has been taken to eliminate the rice monopoly maintained by private traders.
