Indian assistance to reconstruct ports and airfield in Northern Sri Lanka

Feb 03, Colombo: In continuation of the ongoing assistance package to Sri Lanka for rehabilitation in the Northern Province, India is to provide assistance to reconstruct the ports in the North and develop the Palaly airfield, Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha said today.
The High Commissioner made these remarks at a ceremony held today at the Galle Face Green in Colombo to hand over the first lot of the second consignment of Galvanised Corrugated (GC) Sheets for constructing shelters for Sri Lanka's Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in their new places of habitation.
Kantha handed over the consignment of corrugated sheets to Douglas Devananda, Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare and Rishad Bathiyudeen, Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services.
India supplied the first consignment of 2600 metric tons of corrugated sheets in August 2009. The sheets have been distributed to about 20,000 resettled families in Jaffna, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, and Kilinochchi. The second consignment is likely to benefit a similar number of families. The total cost of both consignments is US$ 5.3 million.
Underlying India's commitment to infrastructure development in Northern Sri Lanka, t The High Commissioner said India has already announced a line of credit of US$ 425 million for the reconstruction of railway infrastructure in northern Sri Lanka.
In addition, India is also committed to assist in the rehabilitation of the ports and aviation sector in Sri Lanka to include the Kankasanthurai Port, the Point Pedro Harbour and the Palaly airfield.
