Sri Lanka Defence Secretary unveils War hero Memorial in Elephant Pass

Apr 30, Elephant Pass: Sri Lanka's Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa opened a fitting memorial dedicated to fallen war heroes at Elephant Pass in the North today (30).
Secretary Rajapaksa is on a tour in the Northern region evaluating the safety and security in the region as the war-battered region is experiencing a influx of tourists, businessmen and vendors from the South.
Elephant Pass, a strategic location in the battles with the LTTE terrorists, lies in the isthmus of Jaffna peninsula. The Sri Lankan Army recaptured Elephant Pass in January 2009 from the LTTE who ran over the Army camp at Elephant Pass in a decisive battle in 2000.
On arrival, the Defence Secretary was welcomed by the Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya. After the event Secretary Rajapaksa briefed the media on the upcoming 'Victory Day' commemorations.
Major General Kamal Gunarathne, Major General Chargie Gallage, Brigadier Roshan Seneviratne, Colonel Thilak Hangilipola and Colonel M.M Kithsiri spearheaded the project to build the monument.
Sri Lanka's National Design Centre (NDC) artists Torin Chandrasekara and G.L.N Perera led by Chairman Sunil Fernando (-NDC) had designed the 42-feet masterpiece.
