Apr 30, Colombo: United National Party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and Hambantota District UNP parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa Thursday (29)discussed proposals to be included in the main opposition party's new reforms programme.
Wickremasinghe invited Premadasa for a discussion on party reforms due to the mounting dissension within the party against the UNP leader.
Meanwhile, many groups within the UNP have proposed Premadasa's name for the leadership of the party.
During the discussion Premadasa had proposed an internal election among all party members to elect suitable people for all senior posts in the party at national level.
Premadasa had also emphasized the need to change the party's vision to make it appealing to the rural as well as to urban sectors.
Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga and Kegalle District parliamentarian Kabir Hashim had also attended the meeting.
Several UNPers including Amaratunga and Hashim had been given the task of preparing a concept paper to reform the party, which would include the proposals discussed at yesterday's meeting.
The opinions of all UNP local government and provincial council members as well as parliamentarians are to be sought on reforming the party.
The concept paper is to be presented to the UNP Working Committee shortly.
