Thu, Apr 29, 2010, 08:32 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa along with his security forces chiefs toured the Jaffna peninsula to evaluate the post-war security concerns and other related developments in the region.

The Defence Secretary flew to Jaffna Thursday (29) and took part in a series of important projects and interactive discussions with tri-service and police authorities, the Sri Lanka Army said.

Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya received Secretary Rajapaksa who was accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff and Air Force Commander Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonatileke, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe and Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya, on his arrival at Palaly.

Security Forces Commander of Jaffna Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe briefed the visiting Defence Secretary on the current security network and developments in Jaffna.

The discussions centered largely on post-war concerns, resettlement, de-mining work, civil administrative apparatus, progress on rehabilitation of former LTTE combatants, promotion of civil-military relations, etc., the military said.

The Defence Secretary was updated on the naval security blanket in place in the sea surrounding the whole Jaffna peninsula.

Secretary Rajapaksa ceremonially opened the completely rehabilitated and renovated dockyard at Kankasanthurai Harbour which had been abandoned for over 25 years due to LTTE terrorism.

The opening of the dockyard at Kankasanthurai Harbour eliminates the necessity to tow the ships to Trincomalee port for repairs.

Gotabhaya Rajapaksa also visited the newly-opened Jaffna Civil Affairs Coordinating Office which had been set up to improve relations with the residents of the peninsula.

He also visited the historic Jaffna Fort and observed the renovation work needed to restore the Fort.
