Apr 29, Colombo: Former Army Commander and Colombo district parliamentarian General (Retired) Sarath Fonseka is to speak in parliament during the debate for the extension of the emergency regulations next week.
General Fonseka's party, the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) General Secretary and JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath told the media today (29) that General Fonseka is expected to be the main speaker of the opposition at the debate to extend Emergency during the next parliamentary sessions.
According to Herath, General Fonseka is expected to speak on the alleged human rights abuses in the country and those faced by him personally.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Army is to decide on whether to continue with the general court martial proceedings against General Fonseka on Tuesday (May 4) as stated earlier or to postpone the date.
The military is to decide on the issue since the general court martial proceedings if continued on the 4th would clash with parliamentary sessions, which the General is expected to attend.
DNA parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti earlier stated that regardless of the court martial, General Fonseka would attend parliament on May 4 as he is a member of parliament enjoying parliamentary privileges.
Military Spokesperson, Major General Prasad Samarasinghe has said the military would announce its decision on the court martial shortly.
