* Sri Lanka Foreign Minister meets his Indian counterpart in Thimpu

Apr 28, Thimpu: Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris and his Indian counterpart External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna met in Thimpu on Tuesday (27) and discussed issues regarding a political settlement in Sri Lanka that which ensures a "sense of participation and equality" among the ethnic groups, Indian officials said.

The ministers had discussed the resettlement of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Sri Lanka and their well being and agreed that the displaced should be expeditiously rehabilitated with dignity and some source of livelihood, Indian daily The Hindu reported.

This is Sri Lankan Foreign Minister's first foreign assignment after assuming the post.

According to the report, India and Sri Lanka will discuss the issue in depth during the scheduled talks between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Rajapaksa on the sidelines of the SAARC summit beginning today (28).

The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR said yesterday that Sri Lanka has restarted the resettlement process following a pause due to elections and holidays. The government has resettled 7,000 last week and up to now 207,000 IDPs have been resettled, the UNHCR said.
