Apr 26, Colombo: The Committee conducting the inquiry into the election law violations at Nawalapitiya polling division in Kandy District commenced recording evidence today.
The Committee chaired by attorney-at-law W. Karunajeeva comprises lawyers Champani Padmasekara, Saliya Mathew and Chandra Fernando and Professor Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa as members.
Severe violations of election law by supporters of some ruling party United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) members led the Election Commissioner to annul the results of April 8 general election at 37 election centers in Nawalapitiya polling division and call a re-poll which was held on April 20.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the leader of the UPFA and its main constituent SLFP, last week ordered the Disciplinary Committee of the SLFP to initiate an inquiry with immediate effect into the incidents.
The President held off assigning any cabinet posts to the MPs elected from the Kandy District until the investigation is complete.
The committee aims to submit their report to the President as soon as possible.
