Former MP indicted for offering bribe to facilitate crossover to opposition

Apr 26, Colombo: The Colombo High Court today indicted former parliamentarian and independent presidential candidate Meera Mohideen Mohomed "Myown" Musthafa on bribery charges.
Musthafa is alleged of offering a bribe to facilitate the crossover of a government parliamentarian to the opposition to support the common retired General Sarath Fonseka during this year's presidential election campaign.
The Attorney General filed the indictment this morning with the Colombo High Court. The Attorney General has named 21 witnesses in his indictment.
The former deputy Minister of Higher Education is implicated in offering 4.2 million rupees as a bribe to former National Freedom Front parliamentarian Mohamed Mussammil to crossover to the opposition.
Mussammil lodged a complaint in January with the Criminal Investigations Department against opposition MP Ravi Karunanayaka and "Myown" Mustapha, former UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrema and ex-Presidential Advisor Nazeer Ahamed accusing them of attempting to bribe him to switch his allegiance to Fonseka at the Presidential election.
