Sri Lanka President leaves for Bhutan to attend SAARC summit

Apr 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning left for Bhutan to participate in the conference of the heads of state of South Asian Association of Regional corporation (SAARC).
Leaders of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, and Afghanistan are expected to participate in the 16th SAARC summit held in Bhutan capital Thimpu on April 28 and 29.
Sri Lanka President is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with the leaders of the other SAARC countries during his four-day stay in Bhutan. This would be the first meeting between the two heads of state after the re-election of President Rajapaksa in January this year.
Sri Lankan delegation includes several ministers and government officials. Three agreements of regional importance are due to be signed at the summit.
The SAARC Foreign Ministers' conference is now underway and Sri Lanka's new Foreign Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris is participating in it as his first assignment of the post.
This year's meeting, centered on climate and environment, is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the SAARC organization which was established on December 8, 1985 by the heads of state of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan joined the SAARC as a member in 2007.
