Apr 26, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government is looking at making 'appropriate changes' to the emergency regulations currently imposed in the country, according to the newly appointed Foreign Minister.
The new Foreign Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris told the media Sunday (25) that the new government would look at making appropriate changes to laws that were necessary in times of turbulence. The emergency regulations that give wide powers to the police and security forces are also under 'active consideration' in this regard, he said.
Prof. Peiris had made these revelations in response to a question on Sri Lanka being under attack from the West on various human rights issues.
According to the Minister, laws such as emergency regulations were not made in perpetuity and therefore were "bound to change."
Prof. Peiris had further noted that Sri Lanka would look at building a constant dialogue and reaching out towards the outside world to further strengthen its relations.
