Apr 25, Thimpu: The picturesque capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan is all geared up to host the 16th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Summit (SAARC) from April 28 -29.
The main street of Thimpu, the Bhutanese capital, has been gaily decorated with the portraits of the heads of state from the SAARC member countries, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Maldives for the two-day summit.
The meeting will take place in the majestic Conference Hall of the Bhutanese capital.
The capital city is expected to swarm with about 450 delegates and another 150 journalists covering the event.
This is the first time the tiny Kingdom is hosting Asia's biggest event in its history of 25 years being a member of SAARC. It had skipped three opportunities to hold the event due to lack of infrastructure.
In addition to the eight member countries, the event will accommodate Australia, China, European Union, Iran, Japan, Mauritius, Myanmar, South Korea, and the United States as observers.
Sri Lanka hosted the 15th SAARC summit in Colombo last year. Sri Lanka has been the host for two previous summits in 1991 and 1998.
