Apr 25, Colombo: Former Assistant Leader of Sri Lanka's main opposition UNP, Rukman Senanayake has called for the removal of opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.
Senanayake has reportedly said that Wickremasinghe had to be removed before he destroyed the party completely.
Senanayake last week resigned from all positions held by him in the UNP after the party failed to nominate him through the National List to parliament.
"Wickremasinghe is not only insecure but comfortable to remain as Opposition Leader at massive cost to the UNP and its members," he had said.
According to Senanayake, Wickremasinghe has been gradually pushing the party down the drain since 1994.
He has further noted that the UNP will never win an election until Wickremasinghe remains leader and fails to groom a second leadership.
The UNP has failed to win any of the elections held since 2001 even at provincial level.
