Apr 24, Colombo: Over 5,000 Sri Lankans who gathered to celebrate the New Year at the Jahra stadium in Kuwait City, Kuwait had to cancel the celebrations and leave when angry Kuwaiti Islamists disrupted the event claiming it violated Islamic rules, a Gulf News report said.
The fundamentalists invaded the stadium and forced the organizers to halt the celebrations held yesterday (23) saying that presence of men and women in the stadium and playing loud music on a Friday afternoon violated the Islamic values.
The Sri Lankan Ambassador K.S.C. Dissanayake participating in the celebrations asked the Sri Lankans to leave the place to avoid confrontation with the fundamentalists.
The police said that the Sri Lankans had all the necessary permits and did not break the law.
The Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait meanwhile, will launch a "Sri Lanka Culture Week" from 26th April to 02nd May 2010in Kuwait.
The event, the first ever promotions of its kind co-sponsored by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) and the Sri Lankan Airlines (SLA), is jointly hosted by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters together with Embassy of Sri Lanka.
