Apr 24, Colombo: The spokesman for Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party, Galle District parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatileka said the party this time would have to implement reforms and allocate responsibilities to the new Members of Parliament.
Karunatileka said the UNP should pay more attention to the country while making decisions within the party. According to him, party stalwarts like UNP Hambantota District parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa should be given more responsibilities.
UNP seniors are currently in the process of discussing reforms to be implemented in the party, which include several new appointments. Premadasa's name has reportedly been proposed for the post of Deputy Leader in the party.
Recently a group of lawyers in the UNP Lawyers' Society expressed views criticizing the present activities and the leadership of the party while Assistant Leader Rukman Senanayake resigned from the post after being denied a National List slot from the party.
The once powerful party has lost all levels of elections held in Sri Lanka since 2004 under the leadership of party head Ranil Wickremasinghe and some party members have been asking him to step down.
