Apr 24, Colombo: The historic 'chaithya' of Sri Lanka's Mihintale ancient shrine has been damaged by lightening yesterday, says the Chief Incumbent of the temple Walahahengunaweve Dhammarathana Thero.
A 20 X 25 portion of the second 'Pesawalalla' of the top of the dagoba has been broken in the lightening that struck the structure amid torrential rain, the Thero said.
The lightening prevention system of the shrine had been out of order by the time. Dhammarathana Thero says that the temple authority had informed the issue several times but to the deaf ears of the Archeological Department officials.
Mihintale, located 120 miles northwest from Sri Lanka capital Colombo, is believed by Buddhists to be the venue the King Devanampiyathissa converted into Buddhism in 3rd century BC.
Sri Lanka is experiencing heavy lightening now amidst inter-monsoonal weather conditions. Several deaths due to lightening had been reported in April.
