Apr 23, Colombo: Another constituent party of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party led coalition has decided to leave the United National Front (UNF) over the national List slots.
National Union of Workers (NUW) led by P. Digambaram has decided to leave the UNF following the denial of a National List slot to the party.
Digambaram told the media yesterday (22) that the NUW has decided to leave the UNF since the opposition alliance had gone back on its word and failed to give a National List slot to the party as agreed before the election.
However, the party is yet to decide any future course of action. For the moment he has decided to sit as an independent member.
Digambaram also told the media that it was not possible to crossover now as the government had got a huge number of seats.
However, the government is still six seats short of the required 150 for a two-third majority.
During his speech in parliament yesterday, Digambaram said he would support all the positive measures undertaken by the government for the workers in the country, but would remain in the opposition.
Digambaram was elected to parliament from the Nuwara Eliya District from UNF with the highest number of preferential votes.
