Apr 22, Colombo: The Speaker of the new seventh parliament of Sri Lanka has appointed the leader of United National Party as the Opposition Leader at the legislature's first session.
The UNP led coalition, United National Front, won 51 seats in the parliament, and with the nine seats allocated to it from the National List, has a presence of 60 members. It is the opposition with the highest number of members.
The Tamil coalition Tamil National Alliance (TNA/ITAK) holds 14 seats while the Marxist coalition Democratic National Alliance (DNA) has seven members.
However, the DNA has called for a secret ballot to appoint an opposition leader saying that the opposition should have a new life and a new national leadership. The DNA suggested their leader, former military commander General Sarath Fonseka who was in military custody, should be the new opposition leader.
