Apr 22, Colombo: The Secretary of Sri Lanka Ministry of Education Nimal Bandara says that the Ministry has directed the Provincial Councils to appoint the newly recruited principals to fill the principal vacancies in the Provincial Council schools.
He wished the delays in filling vacancies in schools under Provincial Councils would end soon. The Secretary emphasized that the principal vacancies of the national schools that come under the purview of the central government have been filled now.
However, the Secretary of Ceylon Teachers' Union Joseph Stalin Fernando says that still 6,000 schools country wide are managed by unsystematically selected teachers that were given the responsibility of covering the principal duties.
He pointed out that although the government had recruited 1,918 Grade 2 principals and 2,470 Grade 3 principals this year via a competitive examination held in 2005, 95 percent of them are still not given the principal duties.
