Lawyers call on Sri Lanka's main opposition leader to step down

Apr 21, Colombo: An organization of lawyers affiliated to the main opposition UNP has proposed that UNP 'eader Ranil Wickremasinghe should step down from the party leadership and pave the way for another leader to take charge.
The National Lawyers' Association had made this proposal at a special meeting convened at Sirikotha on Monday (19) evening to determine the reasons for the repeated defeats of the party in the past elections, and ways to restructure the party.
The Association has proposed the name of UNP Hambantota District parliamentarian elect Sajith Premadasa to take over the party leadership from Wickremasinghe. However, the lawyers have not arrived at a consensus on Premadasa as there had been objections raised by several members over nominating his name as the next party leader.
The lawyers meeting had been attended by nearly 150 pro-UNP lawyers and a majority of them have reportedly objected to Wickremasinghe continuing as the UNP leader.
The Association is planning on holding another meeting on May 7 with the participation of UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.
