Apr 20, Colombo: The re-polling held today in Kandy and Trincomalee districts ended peacefully this evening, the Returning Officers of the relevant districts and election monitoring groups said.

The voting at 37 polling centers in the Nawalapitiya polling division of Kandy District and Kumburupitiya polling division of Trincomalee District took place in a free and fair manner, the election officials reported.

Special security was provided for transporting the ballot boxes to counting centers after the polls closed at 4:00 p.m. Representatives of the political parties and independent groups contesting the poll were allowed to accompany the ballot boxes.

According to Returning Officer of Trincomalee Major General T.T.R. De Silva the ballot boxes of the polling centre in Trincomalee had reached the counting centers at 5:00 p.m. and measures are in place to commence the counting.

Executive Director of the election monitoring group People's Action for Free and Fare Election (PAFFREL) Rohana Hettiarachchi said a free and fair environment prevailed in all areas of voting.

According to Hettiarachchi the voter turnout in Nawalapitiya was between 55 and 60 percent and the figure in Trincomalee is around 46 percent.

The other election monitoring group, Center for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) noted that there were significantly fewer incidents of election related violence during this re-poll. The monitors have received reports of only nine minor violations in both districts.

Kandy District Secretary and Returning Office Gotabhaya Jayarathne expect the result of the Nawalapitiya polling division to be declared before midnight tonight. The preferential votes for Kandy district is scheduled to be released by dawn tomorrow.

The Election Secretariat will announce the final results of the April 8 general election tomorrow after the results from the re-poll are finalized.
