Apr 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka's major opposition United National Party (UNP) will convene the newly appointed MPs tomorrow for the inaugural meeting of the parliamentary group.
However, the Monaragala district UNP MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara has not been invited to the meeting, sources say.
The meeting will be held in the parliament under the patronage of party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake and several senior leaders are to address the newly-elected MPs.
The UNP leadership has initiated disciplinary action against the MP based on charges over making unauthorized changes in the party nomination papers for Monaragala district.
Controversy arose when Madduma Bandara as the Moneragala District leader submitted the nomination list omitting the name of the constituent party of the UNF, SLFP (Mahajan Wing), candidate Tissa Kuttiarachchi.
Despite the campaigning by UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe against his election, Madduma Bandara secured the only seat won by the UNP in the district.
Meanwhile, newly elected Kalutara district MP Palitha Thewarapperuma who is now in remand for possessing firearms will also miss the inaugural meeting of the parliamentary group.
UNF alliance is slated to win around 55-60 seats in the parliament when the final result is announced tomorrow. This number includes eight or nine national list seats as well.
