Apr 19, Colombo: The leadership of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) is facing a quandary over selecting members for the party's National List slots.
The UNP is expected to receive nine National List slots according to the results that have thus far been released on the April 8 general elections.
The Elections Commissioner is to officially announce the number of National List slots received by each party following the announcement of the final results on Wednesday.
However, several UNP candidates defeated at the general election have reportedly requested the party leadership to nominate them to parliament through the National List.
Three slots in the National List have already been marked for three party seniors – UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, Rukman Senanayake, and Joseph Michael Perera.
A UNP source said that economist Dr. Harsha de Silva and banker Eran Wickremartane were also likely to be appointed to parliament through the National List.
According to the source, some other likely candidates include former CWC member R.Yogarajan, Hassen Ali and Nizam Kariyapper representing the SLMC and Ruwan Ferdinands representing the SLFP (M) Wing.
However, the party is to announce its final decision on the National List members after the official announcement of the final election results is made.
