Sri Lanka opposition Muslim party insists on its two National List slots in the UNP list as agreed

Apr 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader Rauf Hakeem insists that his party should be given two National List slots from the United National Party (UNP) led United National Front (UNF) in line with the agreement reached between the SLMC and the UNP when forming the coalition.
Hakeem has made this comment amidst speculation that many defeated UNP candidates had requested to be appointed to Parliament through the National List.
The agreement between the SLMC and the UNP entitles the SLMC to two National List slots if the UNF secures less than 10 seats in the National List. In the event, the UNF received more than 10 seats, the SLMC is entitled to receive three National List slots.
The UNP led UNF is expected to receive nine National List slots.
The SLMC is expected to nominate the names of former parliamentarian Hassen Ali and either Nizam Kariyapper or Shafeek Rajabdeen to the two National List slots.
According to Hakeem, the SLMC commands the second highest voter base next to the main opposition UNP.
Other UNF constituent parties, the DPF and the SMFP (M) Wing are also expected to receive seats in parliament through the National List.
