Sri Lanka ruling party MP's Jungle law closes liquor shops in Kelaniya
Mon, Apr 19, 2010, 12:18 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
Apr 19, Kelaniya: Thirty seven licensed liquor shops are reportedly closed in Kelaniya electorate of Gampaha district in Sri Lanka due to threats.
The liquor shops include three liquor outlets in super markets, four beer gardens, and 30 licensed liquor shops.
The closure was due to an announcement by a local politician of the ruling party imposing an unofficial ban on liquor sales. The announcement was made public via loudspeakers on April 16.
The liquor shop owners say that around 100 persons are likely to lose jobs in addition to the loss of revenue to the government due to this situation.
They urge the government to mediate immediately to prevent jungle law disrupting normalcy in the area.
Reportedly the Excise General Wasantha Hapuarachchi is due to discuss the unofficial ban with the Presidential Secretariat and the Finance Ministry today.
