Apr 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa told the new members elected to the parliament from the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) to respect the confidence public placed in them and not to taint their trust.
Addressing the newly-elected legislators at the Presidential Secretariat today, the President said the voters did their part at the General Election by extending utmost support to the UPFA government and now it is the legislators' turn to achieve moral obligations towards the public and the nation.
"You should be committed to accelerate the development programmes in order to fulfill the aspirations of the people and the country," he told the UPFA parliamentarians at the gathering.
The ruling party today held a workshop to orient the new MPs on parliamentary traditions, standing orders as well as on the records of former parliamentarians.
President Rajapaksa cut a cake and celebrated the occasion with the new MPs.
The ruling coalition has so far received 117 slots in the 225-member parliament and another 26 seats are expected after the re-poll on April 20 in certain polling divisions in Kandy and Trincomalee districts.
