* SLMC and TNA to explore ways to strengthen Sri Lanka's minority voices in parliament
Sat, Apr 17, 2010, 07:30 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 17, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has accepted an invitation extended by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to look at the possibilities of the two parties working together in the next parliament to secure the rights of the minority communities.

SLMC Leader Rauf Hakeem, who is currently campaigning for the April 20 re-poll in Nawalapitiya in the Kandy District has reportedly agreed to meet with the TNA Leader R. Sampanthan upon his return to Colombo after the poll.

Hakeem has said the meeting would be based on strengthening the voice of minorities in the parliament and to prevent certain opportunistic amendments from being introduced to the Constitution from certain extremist elements.

Hakeem has also ruled out any likelihood of the SLMC joining the government saying he would continue his political career in the opposition.

The SLMC is currently a constituent party of the UNP led UNF.
