Apr 16, Colombo: Construction of a new neurosurgery unit at Sri Lanka's main hospital in Colombo is nearing completion and is slated to open by the end of the month.
Once opened the 300-bed super-specialty tertiary-care facility will be one of Asia's most advanced neurosurgical units constructed, with special focus on neurotrauma, neurology, and neurosurgery.
The eight-storey, 175,000 square feet building constructed at a cost of 2.8 billion rupees is equipped with a roof-top helipad to provide air ambulance services.
The facility accommodates 6 ultra-modern Operation Theaters (3 for and 3 for), 66 ICU beds (33 each for neurosurgery and neurotrauma), 43 HDU beds, 37 Spinal Ward beds, 53 Head Injury beds and 46 neurosurgery beds.
Director of the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Hector Weerasinghe has said that the Unit will be Asia's most sophisticated Neurosurgical Unit. A staff of 600 is expected to be employed at the facility.
The project was partially funded through a US $ 4.89 million loan provided to the Sri Lankan Government by the Saudi Fund for Development.
