* Most parties of Sri Lanka's governing alliance managed to return members to parliament
Fri, Apr 16, 2010, 09:01 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 16, Colombo: Most allies of Sri Lanka's ruling United People's Freedom Alliance have managed to win parliamentary seats at the April 8 general elections except for the Upcountry People's Front (UPF) which had failed to obtain a single seat.

The nationalist Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) has won two seats at the election including the seat of former Environment Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.

The National Freedom Front (NFF) led by Wimal Weerawansa won two seats with Weerawansa himself topping the UPFA Colombo District list.

The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) led by former minister Arumugam Thondaman has won three seats from the hill country of Nuwara Eliya.

The All Ceylon Muslim Congress (ACMC) has won three seats while the National Congress (NC) led by former minister A. L. M. Athaullah has won one seat from Digamadulla District.

The Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) led by former minister Douglas Devananda has won three seats in the Jaffna District.

The Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) has won one seat in the Matara District while the Communist Party (CP) has managed to get one member elected from the Kegalle District.

The Mahajana Eksath Permauna (MEP) led by former minister Dinesh Gunawardena has also won two seats.

However, the UPF was defeated at the election due to a split in the party following the death of its leader, former minister P. Chandrasekeran.

The difference of opinion in the UPF had come up as one faction held the idea that the party should rejoin CWC and back its leader Thondaman while the other faction wanted to field late leader's wife Kanthi Chandrasekeran.
