Apr 15, Colombo: A Sri Lanka court today granted bail to a businessman who was arrested for delivering a large amount money for the detained former military chief General (Retd.) Sarath Fonseka.
Sanjeeva Kumara, a businessman from Nawala, who has supposedly delivered the 75 million rupees found in the bank vaults belong to the mother of General Sarath Fonseka's son-in-law Danuna Tilakaratne, was arrested by the police last month when he returned to the country from India.
The Mt. Lavinia Chief Magistrate Harsha Sethunga ordered the suspect to be released on two counts of personal bail valued at Rs 1 million each when the case was heard today.
The judge ordered Sanjeeva Kumara to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department each Sunday between 9 am and noon. The suspect was further ordered to hand over his passport and refrain from traveling overseas. The case will be heard again on May 14.
During a search on a court order in February the Criminal Investigations Department found 527,000 US Dollars, 100 sterling pounds and 15 million Sri Lankan rupees totaling up to 75 million Sri Lankan rupees in four bank safety deposit boxes that belonged to Mrs. Asoka Tillakaratne, mother-in-law of Fonseka's daughter.
